DescriptionCertosa, Pavia (Renais. Carthusians), Faade. Founded in 1396 by the Duke of Milan, Giangaleazzo Visconti, on one of his estates, on the occasion of a vow made by his wife, Caterina. The faade is the first work of Renai to make a really deep impression in France. Its details are all classical, but the overall rich effect is to evoke ancient Rome or 15th c. Florence. The designer was probably Giovanni Antonia Amadeo. Faade is a screen, concealing rather than expressing the structure behind. The overall theme of 50 free standing figures is a triumph of the church over paganism. More like a palace of a great prince than a monastery. Thas faade was begun between 1480 and 14-9 (?), but was finished more soberly during the next century. Meant to be crowned by a pediment.
