DescriptionPlan Certosa, Pavia (Renais. Carthusians). Carthusians represent another quest for simplicity that goes back to the late 11th c., when a community of hermits came together only to ensure their solitude, their ideal. In Carthusian architecture, the cloister is not a meeting place leading to various communal rooms, but a passage between separate cells. Prominent features of Benedictine and Cistercian houses--dormitory, refectory, chapter house, etc., are insignificant in Carthusian houses.
