| Description | West front of Maulbronn Abbey, Germany. Cistercians came to Germany during the lifetime of St. Bernard. Begun in 1147, this was one of the largest and most prosperous of their foundations and preserves several architectural features that have failed to survive elsewhere. Among them is narthex, or west porch, wheree lay members of the abbey, guests and travellers could assemble before entering the church. |
