| Description | Fontenay and Cistercians. Lying low in a moist valley, this Cistercian abbey speaks the harsh, austere language of St. Bernard, a great reformer who led monasticism back to its first ideals. Here, the church, seen from the east, in on the right. To the left is the chapter house, originally large, and part of the dormitory range. Over the gable is a belfry--a modest Cistercian substitute for a bell tower. |
