| Description | Fontenay and Cistercians. Fontenay from the west. Secluded valley is typical of Cistercian sites. Note the small round building in the foreground, the dovecote; west front of the church is on left and forge on extreme right. Complete absence of ornamentation. Note role of St. Bernard in founding order, against the worldliness of Clunias. His indictment explains the cool, practical, devoted austerity of Cistercian architecture. |
