| Description | Plan of cathedral and monastery of Norwich. Begun in 1096, an example of Norman influence, thru Herbert de Losinga, formerly abbot of Fecamp. Heart of monastery the cloister; monks would enter church at N-E corner, walking around cloister, first chapter house, 60 ft deep, where whole convent would meet, over which dormitory stretched, along whole east side of cloister and beyond. West range, nearest outside world, contained guests' hall and parlour. A standard layout for Benedictine monasteries. Bishop's palace was as remote as possible from the monastery. High walls around the monastery existed in part because of bad feelings with the town; note, in 1272, antagonism reached a peak of violence when a body of mercenaries hired by the bishop left the abbey and pillaged the town--townsmen relataliated. |
