| Description | Plan of St Gall, 9th century. Plan of St. Gall, redrawn and simplified from 9th c. original in monastery library of St. Gall in Switzerland. Nothing as completely regular as this was ever built, and was probably never intended to be. It does give a more complete 'programme' for a monas than any actual remains. Drawn about 820; where and why not definitely known, but probably sent by abbot of Reichenau to abbot of St Gall after council in 816, at which latter not present. A sort of blueprint for a standard layout, arranged with artificial regularity but containing everything needed for a working monastery. Abbey of St Gall built in fact according to a different plan. Note traditional plan, of cloister on south side of Nave, and on other 3 sides dormitory (east), refectory (south), and cellar (west); monks entered church via south transept. Note chimneys show what was to be heated; note, latrines show which sections to be self-contained. Number of farm buildings and services are reminiscent of feudal manor. Infirmary and novices quarters, east of church, little worlds of their own, while lavish attention paid to charity, hospitality, and education. Church and claustral buildings of stone, others probably to be of wood. |
