DescriptionPoblet Abbey, Cistercian Abbey in Spain. Entrance to abbey church of Poblet, Catalonia, illustrates a contrast familiar all over Europe between the austerity of early Cistercian ideals and subsequent worldliness. When first built, the west front of the Nave (here, ween with half of a rose window peering over the wall) was a place of embattled faith behind a double rampart of defenses. In the 18th c., when the new Baroque front was added, it had become a centre of cultured, conservative prestige. Poblet was founded in 1151. From the beginning, Poblet, like Maulbronn, enjoyed lavish support from local nobility. An accepted burial place of the royal house of Aragonese. It paid no taxes and had the right to display the royal coat of arms. Its fame and wealth was increased by travellers and important people who used it as a staging post, since it was on one of the main Roman roads of Spain. The church dates from 1180-1196.
